Appearance
Dark brown and viscous. Slight red tinge on edge when poured. Dark and opaque. No head present, skinny ring of foam on edge.
Aroma
boozy vanilla, slight spice, all spice, nutmeg, cinnamon…very delightful nose. Balanced sometimes these stouts lean sweet but this still maintains some character
Flavor
the palate continues the nose notes by amping and accentuating them. I taste cocoa, rye spice, vanilla, brown butter, oatmeal, bourbon soaked cherry, slight smoke and spice faintly reminds me of mezcal. VERY faint but a very cool note. A wave of rye spice accented by sweet vanilla and cocoa white caps. The wave subsides into a cinnamon oatmeal note. There are very faint orange notes like the holiday orange chocolates you get. And it hints at a Mexican mocha, there is a bit of spice here as well. Most likely from the rye.
Mouthfeel
Viscous and molasses like
Drinkability
Definitely one to sip on over a long period or while watching a movie or reading a book. Something to be enjoyed among good company.
Verdict
This is a complex extra aged imperial stout. Most have one note of sweet and vanilla but the rye barrels seems to really elevate this beer. It’s sweet, spicy and chocolatey. This creeps up into the upper echelons of good BBS’s that I’ve had. Pick up if you see it.
